This talk looks at different conceptions of abstract painting, various stories of its origins and future, and the metaphysical worldviews it gives of the nature of the universe and our place in it. It examines two profoundly different worldviews, spiritualism and materialism, and how they have shaped abstract painting. In the process it touches on the works by the artists showing in the current exhibition at The Little Machine – Paul Hoban, Christian Lock, Loren Orsillo, and Jazmine Deng. Their paintings and objects will give an opportunity to think about the possible futures that could await abstract art, and the artists who make it.
