LET BEAUTY BE, 順其自然.

“LET BEAUTY BE, 顺其自然” brings together work by Jingwei Bu and Linda Marie Walker. The bilingual title is drawn from Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching. The phrases are not translations of one another, but jointly express core ideas of the exhibition. The first part, Let Beauty Be, urges us to let go of our aesthetic considerations and expectations when engaging with the world. Having strong preconceived ideas of what is beauty or ought to be, will only hinder its discovery and true appreciation. The second part, 顺其自然 (shùn qí zìrán “let nature take its course”) interprets a profound principle of Tao, that of 无为而治 (wú wéi ér zhì, to take no action). It encourages us to absolve intention, to let go of goal-oriented action, and rather immerse us in pure attention to inaction. Taken together “Let Beauty Be, 顺其自然” resonates with both artists’ works whilst leaving space for their differences.
