Friday 20 February 12-2pm: Jingwei Bu performance Tea no Tea
Aldo Iacobelli’s latest series, Ghostly Pages , showcases a collection of paintings and drawings that quietly ruminate on memory and stories lingering in the artist’s mind. As a child in Italy, Aldo’s mother laboured for another family, often drifting to sleep in the stables with the horses. This memory emerges in the work as a dreamlike image. The other works likewise seem to grasp at fleeting moments that linger in the mind of the artist or haunt his dreams.
Jingwei Bu’s works are formed entirely by pouring leftover tea water onto paper and canvas. Each piece speaks to both patience and the tension between our attempts to control the environment and the necessity of letting go: the droplets of tea water wander freely, in vain guided by the artist, following gravity and chance. The works are playful — several are called Tea Dragons, as their irregular shapes curl and coil around the disjointed paper — but underneath lies a quiet yet deeply philosophical idea, grounded in Bu’s Chan Buddhist practice.
We invite you to visit us at the Fair, where you can engage in conversation about the works and their unique processes. Don’t miss Jingwei Bu’s live performance, Tea No Tea, which continues her practice of “pouring tea until it’s all evaporated”, on Friday 20 February 12pm-2pm.
Our presentation at MAF is supported by a Marketing and Development grant from Create SA.
